I'm Jim Klockow, and Monkey Jump Media is me.
When I was just five, I peered up at my Dad and said, “Dad, when I grow up, I want to work in search engine optimization and Web analytics.”
Not really. Nobody else did either. Everyone in this business entered from a different direction as the importance of Web metrics and search engines dawned on anyone who hoped to get attention for the Web site they use to sell their stuff or just spread their message.
My background is in journalism, mostly in the Seattle area, where I live and work. As a journalist, I worked for the King County Journal newspapers, The Associated Press, The News Tribune and KING5.com, the online arm of the Seattle NBC affiliate KING TV.
But when Microsoft hired me to work on the MSN.com homepage and later at Bing, I discovered two other things that fascinated me: data (specifically Web analytics) and search.
While at Microsoft, where Web traffic is measured in the tens of millions, I learned about how people search, how search engines work ... or don't ... and how to use the data from any Web site to improve traffic. I used data to create major increases in traffic for parts of the MSN homepage, in particular, those dealing with search. I also became a certified search engine marketing professional through the SEMPO institute and helped search optimize the MSN homepage for the benefit of the broader MSN network.
It was all an unexpected thrill and quite a change for a word guy, but having learned these things, I'm ready to recreate it for the people who need it most, small business owners trying to get attention in the vastness of the Web.
